Week 10 Tezuka

Week 10 Tezuka

I have already read the mushishi and Rumiko Takahashi before, I was, very surprised by the fact that this course would include these manga. I means, I read them for fun, but didn’t realized the educational value in them. Now, after I change my point of view and starts to read them from a different perspective, I found some very interesting question that I would like to discuss.
The first one is what cause such a big difference both in the art style and story between western comic and eastern manga? The first idea that comes to my mind is the differences in industry structure. Based on my personal experiences, western comic and animation industry worship the value of cooperation. In this way, the final works get produced much faster and smoother. However, I found this kind of workflow tend to erase the “individual personality” in the work. Imaging you have a crazy idea that you really want to put in to the work, or many just an idea that seems funny to you, but you got questioned by most of your colleague said it doesn’t make sense, so you have to take it out. However, in the eastern workflow, the production of the work may not be as efficient as western, but it does contain more personality since most the story was control by individual.
The second logical explanation could be the difference in audience’s taste. However, it might be a good explanation decade ago, but from what I see, our generation got more influences by manga instead of comic, I don’t see any reason why can’t western audience accepted Japanese manga, I only see the western industry are afraid to try.
