week 6 Underground Comix

Week 6
            Underground Comix

I read the The Book of Mr. Natural and understand why it was underground. Sex, yeah, it does contain a decent amount of sexual content and Robert Crumb didn’t just “implied” or cut away the camera during the sex scenes in the comic. He draw those private body parts out, in details…but is this the only reason why it was considered undergrounded? In my opinion, not really. Yes, Mr. Natural is a rude old man and does whatever he wants, but I guess that also makes it one of the very early comics that doesn’t care much about being political correct. In fact, Robert Crumb is being very sarcastic to the society in his comic world. I can definitely see his self-reflection in the form of Mr. Natural. He doesn’t care much about writing a cool story or something that would amazed people, in fact, I feel like he uses his comic to “complete” about stuffs, all kind of stuffs. Therefore, his comic is more “real” or should I said closer to reader’s life, and I guess that is what makes him successful.
