Week 11 Literary Graphic Novels
           
            I read the Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli this week. I have to said it is the kind of comic that you can reread many times. I really like how the artist break the characters into different geometric component to emphasis the character’s characteristic. David cut between the past and present life of the professor to show his inner conflicts and the reason he gets lost in his life and don’t know what to do next now. The artist uses some very interesting technics to show character’s mental status. These include but is not limited, change the line weights, use warmer color in those good-old time memories and colder color in present time.
            But those aspects all belong to the artistic skills side in my opinion, what really touches me is the emotion inside. It has so much up and down and so really that I can see myself in the story. Somehow I feel I’m the professor, I been searching for the right one for so long and found nothing. I don’t know if I’m still whom I used to be, don’t know if this whole searching progress changes my initial intention, don’t know if I’m still have the courage to keep on looking…I’m kind of feeling old like the professor in the book…and don’t know if I will end like him..

Week 8             I read the March, and it was the first time I read a non-fictional comic story, more like a historical story. Personally, I’m not a big fan of these comic, but I did found something interesting.             First the artwork is truly stunning. If I have to ask myself what is the purpose of making these historical story comic than read it on the paper. I would properly say it is the immersive experience it brings to the audiences. By the usage of image composition, John Lewis was able to draw audiences into what was really happened during the African American Civil rights movement. Week 9 European Comics Tradition

Week 9 European Comics Tradition             I read the Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It is basically a self biography which shows how Marjane grow up in Iran and reflects the struggle and oppression Iranian woman had in those years. I know this idea may sound crazy or even evil, but the first thing that come to my mind after the story is even Marjane are barely allowed to do anything due to the various social problems in Iran, she is still an outgoing, optimistic girl, full of curiosity for the outside world, and also hold the ambition to challenge the various unfairness in society, and keep questioning the dogma which doesn’t really make sense to her. But what happened after she gets to French? Without these “controls” (either from religion or her parent), I was surprised by the fact that she seems to degenerates under the temptation of “freedom”. week 6 Underground Comix

Week 6             Underground Comix             I read the The Book of Mr. Natural and understand why it was underground. Sex, yeah, it does contain a decent amount of sexual content and Robert Crumb didn’t just “implied” or cut away the camera during the sex scenes in the comic. He draw those private body parts out, in details…but is this the only reason why it was considered undergrounded? In my opinion, not really. Yes, Mr. Natural is a rude old man and does whatever he wants, but I guess that also makes it one of the very early comics that doesn’t care much about being political correct.
