Week 12 Women in Comics
Week 12 Women in Comics
Before I
read any comics for this week, I’m already make up my mind that, in my blog,
the first thing I’m going to say is----“I don’t see a difference in comics
create by woman or man”. However, to my surprise…I think I did found some
slight differences in women in comic there are created by man than woman.
I first
read the Diary of a Dominatrix by Alison Bechdel. Beside the various sexual
content, one thing that catches my attention is the struggle the main character
goes through. She seems having trouble fighting the various stereotypes (like
big boob, tiny waist and so on) of what man considers sexy in society.
Therefore, the whole story is very subjective, lots of inner conflicts and
Alison really shows the main character’s anger or disdain toward those
so-called-sexy stereotypes. Therefore, reader starts to see a woman who wants
the power and wants to change the people around her. In other words, a woman
who tries to fight a patriarchal society which consists of a male-dominated
power structure throughout organized society and in individual relationships.
What really surprised me is that I thought Alison Bechdel is a woman,
therefore, can created such a strong woman character to speak for woman.
However, Alison Bechdel turns out to be a “he”. More ironically, I then read
the “This One Summer” by Emil Ferris, which I make sure is a female artist
first, and it turns out she seems doesn’t even care about how man views woman.
Yes, that is correct, woman character created by man tend to subconsciously
care about how man see them, but not for the woman character created by female,
in fact, they have their own life and own emotion to express, and that has
nothing to do with man. They simply don’t care.
I know I
should probably read more before I nail down the words, but at least one thing
I can be pretty sure by now is that does exist some differences between comic
created by man than woman, and those differences does add more diversity to the
comic world.
