Week 14 Web Comics

            I read Johnny the Homicidal Maniac. Different then what I expect from the name, the art style is actually pretty “cute” instead of realistic. In some pages, artist even simply the character to stick figures with some simple facial expression. The simplification of the anatomy gives more expression and more exaggeration to character movement. Also, with limited details, audiences can focus more on the story and dialogue. Maybe because it is web comic, which means it is almost produces by just one individual, it gives artist a much broad choices of topics than traditional comic industry. Also the content is more modern related, very expressive, doesn’t care too much about the following the traditional story telling way. Artist tells whatever and whenever he or she wants. I’m not sure of this kind of comics are good for kids, but it is definitely fun for grownups to read.

Week 7 Maus

Week 7             Maus             There is definitely a lot of symbolism in Maus, but I do not want to go over it in details, I will try to focus more on how the war change Artie’s father, Vladek. Even Vladek appears as a hateful old man in the book, but I believe that is not his false. In fact, I can see how deep the war has influence him. And doesn’t like those fairy tales we read before, that is no such a thing called happened ending for the war. Even the war end, its influence still roots deeply in Vladek. He doesn’t trust anybody, knows how to take advantages of people’s sympathy and very self-centered. All these sounds bad, but I can’t deny the fact that these are what it takes to survival from the war. So I guess all the good people died first during the war age and those who struggle to survive learn how to be selfish and lied in order to survived. Week 9 European Comics Tradition

Week 9 European Comics Tradition             I read the Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi. It is basically a self biography which shows how Marjane grow up in Iran and reflects the struggle and oppression Iranian woman had in those years. I know this idea may sound crazy or even evil, but the first thing that come to my mind after the story is even Marjane are barely allowed to do anything due to the various social problems in Iran, she is still an outgoing, optimistic girl, full of curiosity for the outside world, and also hold the ambition to challenge the various unfairness in society, and keep questioning the dogma which doesn’t really make sense to her.
